Mavs Need Dirk and Kirk

Jason Kidd is old. The trade was a bad move. The Mavs shouldn’t have given up Diop and Harris. But that’s over. Time to deal with today. And today, the Bulls have the #1 pick. If they are smart, they’ll pick the point guard Rose. But if they do, they’ll have two college stars at point. Hinrich is obviously not the man of the future for Chicago. But he would fit nicely in Dallas.

His $11million salary might be prohibitive, but with all the free agents Dallas can flush, there might be room. Sadly, no matter what is said, Jason Kidd will be playing for Dallas next season. No matter how stupid that move is. So, with the remaining starting positions you have Dirk, Bass, Damp, and an opening. You put Hinrich at the 2 guard spot and let him reign down hell on his opponents from the outside. With Dirk and Kirk on the perimeter, Bass and Damp inside, Kidd should find enough passing targets to suit his non-shooter style.

Surely the Bulls could use a guard like Josh Howard on their quick, young team. Surely. Is this deal doable? Not likely. But it would make for one hell of a combo next season.

Best Mavericks By Salary

Let’s take a quick look at the Dallas Mavericks’ roster in light of salaries. You can tell me if it makes sense or not. Let’s start with the top paid salary of the ‘07-’08 season.

Jason Kidd ($19.7 million)
Dirk Nowitzki ($16.3 million)
Erick Dampier ($10.6 million)
Josh Howard ($9.5 million)
Jason Terry ($8.9 million)
Jerry Stackhouse ($6.75 million)
Devean George ($2.3 million)
Eddie Jones ($1.8 million)
Antoine Wright ($1.6 million)
Brandon Bass ($770k)
Malik Allen ($770k)
Juwan Howard ($761k)
JJ Barea ($687k)
Jamaal Magloire ($231k)
Tyronn Lue ($199k)

Jason Kidd is seriously over paid. Based on salaries around the league, he’s worth $7 million tops. Dirk is probably paid fairly. Erick Dampier should have to forfeit $8 million dollars just for being a colossal disappointment. Josh Howard and Jason Terry are both making a couple million more than they deserve. Stackhouse should be around the $1.5-2 million mark, so cut his salary by 4 million+.

Two players are definitely underpaid: Tyronn Lue and Brandon Bass. You can expect Bass to collect when his contract comes up for renegotiation. Lue will make a million or more somewhere.

Everyone else is probably where they deserve to be. Obviously, you can’t look at player performance and just wave a magic wand to make things equitable. Players get more than they earn often enough.

Makes you wonder who will still be here at the beginning of the ‘08 season. Then again, based on the sparkling record the Mavericks’ front office has with trades and drafts, we’ll probably see the same mess next year.

Rick Carlisle and Other Changes

Rick Carlisle coming in to take over as head coach for the Mav’s is just the first inevitable domino that will fall this off season. I think Carlisle is a great choice for the Dallas. Both restructuring the roster and implementing a new vision and identity will be Carlisle’s biggest challenges. Do they restructure again and try to pick up some pieces that will compliment Dirk and Kidd? Or do they blow the whole team up and start shopping Dirk and Kidd to the highest bidder?

It looks like Dirk isn’t going anywhere. Not as long as Cuban and Donnie Nelson are running the team. As for Kidd – I doubt Cuban will admit that it was a mistake to trade for Kidd and that’s what he would be admitting if he shopped Kidd around. So this is how we can speculate it will go down: Kidd and Dirk are safe for the next season. Bass is likely a lock as well. Everybody else will be cut, traded, or retire (hopefully).

If I was GM, I would be looking at teams that underachieved, are looking to rebuild, or just plain suck and I would take a long, hard look at their rosters. And then obviously scour the free agency market to see who wants a big contract playing for the Mavericks.

Dallas has some value in Josh Howard. Rather than keep the pot smoking underachiever, Dallas might as well try to get something valuable for him.

So let’s see what’s out there and who Dallas should go after.

Elton Brand
: apparently he is a free agent this off season and one the Mavericks should really look at it. How about Josh Howard to New Jersey for Richard Jefferson? How about Jason Terry to Sacramento for Ron Artest?

Let’s look at the some teams out there who have players they would probably like to get rid of:

Kwame Brown, Memphis – Center
Andre Miller, Philadelphia – Point Guard
Quentin Richardson, New York – Shooting Guard

I won’t make any value judgments about these players, but SOMETHING has to be done.
